It took 4 games, 45 innings, and the longest postseason game in MLB History, but the San Francisco Giants have finally defeated the Washington Nationals. The Nationals came in to the series with the best record in the National League, and were expected by many to make it to, if not win the World Series. Washington played well overall, but the difference maker in the series was big making plays in the clutch. The Nationals seemed almost nonexistent late in close games and as a result, they ended up losing those games. All three of their losses in that series were by exactly 1 run.
The Giants on the other hand were able to come up big in the clutch multiple times throughout the series, possibly one of the most important characteristics of a baseball team in October. One example of this was in game two, when Brandon Belt hit Pablo Sandoval in during the 18th inning to end the longest playoff game in MLB history. Another example of this was in game four, when Hunter Pence made a difficult leaping catch along the right field wall to take away a hit from Jayson Werth. The Giants will move on to play the Cardinals in the National League championship, and if they keep playing like they have in the clutch, they are just need to win 2 more series to win their 3rd World Series since 2010.
