It is said that a captain must always go down with his ship, but what is the case when the captain, or even the second person in command, are no longer even on the ship? A smooth sailing ship would suddenly be sinking rapidly. This was certainly the case for Brazil on Tuesday when team captain, Thiago Silva (suspended one game for yellow card vs.Columbia), and star player Neymar (suffered a broken vertebrae against Columbia) were unable to play in Brazil's gruesome World Cup loss to Germany.
With no experienced leaders on the field, Brazil seemed to have lost the game mentally, even before kickoff. Thirty minutes in, Brazil found themselves down 5-0. Their ship then hit an iceberg, and it seemed that nobody had bothered to try to save it from sinking. A team that was favored to win the World Cup was now being humiliated on their home turf with a score that would be hard to believe if it was a video game. Germany scored 2 more goals the rest of the game, and only allowed 1 goal(Oscar scored in the 90th minute) to win by 6, a very respectable margin, especially in the World Cup Semifinal.
Germany also deserves a great deal of credit for the win, and they would've been a tough opponent for Brazil even if they had Silva and Neymar. Equipped with the highest scorer in World Cup history (16 Goals), Miroslav Klose (16 world Cup goals), and two players with two goals in the Semifinal versus Brazil (Schürrle and Kroos) Germany has an even balanced attack, and will face Argentina in the World Cup Final. Brazil will face the Netherlands in a consolation match for third place. Silva's suspension will be over by then, and it will be interesting to see if the ship will sink or sail into third place with a proper captain.
