On September 11, 2001, Welles Crowther lost his life while rescuing others in the 9-11 Twin Tower Attacks. Crowther saved 12 people's lives and was an alumni of Boston College, where he played Lacrosse. To honor Welles, Boston College decided to dedicate Saturday's game against Number 6th Ranked USC to him, with players and coaches uniforms outfitted with a "Red Bandana" pattern. The Red Badana was a signature look of Welles, and one he donned from when he was a child, to the day he died.
Although USC was heavily favored to win, BC played with courage, strength and selflessness- all traits that Crowther displayed on the day of his death. The Eagles were able to pull off an upset win in his honor, beating the Trojans in a nail biter, 37-31.
Boston College showed tremendous strength on the ground, and had 451 rushing yards for 5 touchdowns. USC on the other hand, was held to only 20 yards on the ground. Boston College really came up big in the clutch, and in conclusion were able to beat a Top 10 ranked team, while unranked for the 5th time in school history.
It was best put it this way, by ESPN announcer Brad Nessler, "On a Red Bandana night, it's going to be a red letter day for Boston College."
